10 Tips To Help You Get Back To Exercising

Make yourself a schedule

If you open the calendar on your phone right now, I bet you can quite easily block out three slots in your week for you to work out. If you’ve booked it, it’s in your mind and you’re more likely to stick to it rather than go spontaneously. Go on, do it now.

Use the 5-minute rule and start small
When you’re trying to get back into the swing of things, an hour-long workout can seem impossible. This leads to many of us avoiding going to the gym and procrastinating instead. So, instead of overwhelming yourself and stopping before you’ve started, simply commit to five minutes.
Then, if after five minutes you find that you don’t have the energy to keep going, stop. However, the case usually is that once you start moving, you’ll feel better about doing a longer workout. Even if you do end up stopping after five minutes, you’ve started something and that is still something to be proud of.
Focus on getting moving
How good we are at something usually determines how likely we are to do it. It doesn’t matter if you’re a complete amateur or an Olympian, it’s getting your body moves that counts.
Set yourself up

Once you’ve got those workout slots in your calendar, don’t let anything get in the way of them. Get out your gym clothes ready, pack your bag and set your alarm. However, instead of keeping your alarm clock or phone on the nightstand, put it on the other side of the room, so when it goes off you have to get up. This makes you more likely to get up, get ready and out of the house to make the most of that workout.

If you’re someone that typically works out after work, do the same prep the night before so that you’ve got everything to go straight there. Your gym bag will be right by your desk, to remind you of what’s coming and keep you motivated.
Do it for you
As tempting as it can be to share your progress on social media, especially as there will always be encouraging comments from friends and family; remember that the only person you’re doing this for is you! It requires your time, effort and dedication to exercise and if it’s not this that is making you feel good, you may struggle to stay motivated and hit your goals.
Get yourself a gym buddy
It’s so easy to not go to the gym or do your workout because there is no one to answer to. Why not ask a friend, family member or work colleague to work out with you? You’ll feel motivated to exercise, add some fun to your workouts and allow you to catch up with them too!
Music makes a difference

When working out, the music you listen to can make a huge difference. You need to be listening to something that motivates you and makes you feel pumped up. Perhaps create a playlist of your favorite songs to help get you moving.
Take it outside the gym
The gym life isn’t for everyone, whether it be because of the atmosphere or the types of workouts. Some prefer to be out in the fresh air and run in their local park or play in a sports team. Being healthy and fit looks different for different people and we get our results in different ways. If you find that the gym isn’t working for you, then don’t stay there. If you’re not enjoying it, then you’re more likely to be inconsistent or give up entirely.

What is important to remind ourselves is that a habit is created from the consistent activities that we choose to spend our time on. So, the more consistent you are with your workouts, the easier it becomes part of your daily life and won’t seem like a challenge.
Reflect
What intimidates us sometimes is that we think of the effort we need to put in, rather than the outcome we’ll get if we do. There will always be a time when you don’t feel like working out, but you push through and do it anyway, and how amazing does it feel afterwards? It feels great!
So, you might feel a bit sore the next day, but you’ll never regret giving yourself that kick up the butt to get that workout done.
