Joey is a revolutionary crawling product proven to aid the physical and cognitive development of infants at risk of delay. Daytot, a pioneering start-up dedicated to supporting infant development, approached Affect Design Studio to create Joey, an innovative product designed to help young babies with vulnerabilities learn to crawl. Joey promotes prone positioning and active movement—critical activities for developing muscle strength, balance, coordination, and head control.
The product features a supportive harness that securely positions the child and a wheeled base that enables independent movement using their arms and legs. Its unique design provides the stability and support needed for infants to develop essential motor skills while encouraging autonomy in movement.
A central aspect of the project was Affect Studio’s collaboration with renowned neuroscientist Dr. Marianne Barbu-Roth and her clinical research team at Université Paris Cité. The brief was to translate their ground breaking insights into a product that is both clinically effective and user-friendly. By working closely with the team, Affect gained a deep understanding of infant movement patterns, which informed Joey’s distinctive form and features.
Extensive testing and refinement led to the development of two sizes, tailored to suit infants at different stages of development. In addition to its clinical benefits, Joey was meticulously designed to meet the practical needs of caregivers. Its tool-free assembly and disassembly make it easy for busy parents to use and allow for efficient sanitization in professional environments. These practical considerations also guided the diligent selection of high-quality polymers and fabrics, ensuring Joey is functional in clinical settings and comfortable in family homes.
Clinical trials highlighted Joey’s transformative impact:
At 9 months, 60% of Joey-trained infants were able to crawl independently, compared to just 38% in the control group.
Affect Studio set out to combine clinical innovation with the familiar and approachable language of a mainstream children’s product, ensuring it feels at home in everyday life while achieving significant developmental outcomes. Now available in the UK, EU, USA, Australia, and New Zealand, Joey is making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families worldwide.
