Out of all the bizarre things players can do in Baldur’s Gate 3, arguably the most unhinged is sleep with a Druid using his Wild Shape ability, and Performance Director Greg Lidstone notes that creating the moment was just as strange as playing it. Throughout one’s journey through the Forgotten Realms, it’s likely that Halsin, a smooth-talking Wood Elf Druid, will make contact with the party and before too long start becoming very familiar. The resulting scene has become notorious amongst the fanbase but Larian Studios had some idea of how it would be received while it was being shot.

Per GamesRadar+, Lidstone discussed creating the infamous scene during a Game Developers Conference talk, noting that in order to make everyone comfortable, he turned to an intimacy coordinator to make sure the performers knew what was happening and how to handle it all. Lidstone explained:

“We wanted somebody there to sort of keep an eye on this and make sure that the actors felt safe.
So we had a Zoom call with the intimacy coordinator [Enric Ortuno] and were chatting with him
, and he was lovely and we just got a really good sense that he would be there for the actors and that he was confident enough that he would stand up to me if I was making the wrong decisions.”

Despite bringing in an intimacy coordinator, Lidstone was still initially confused by the scene. “What happened in my life that led me to this point? There’s a bear in the scene!” he quipped during the talk, emphasizing his initial shock to discovering how Halsin was being implemented in the cinematic.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Is All About Romance

Earning a reputation as one of the “thirstiest” mainstream games of all time, Baldur’s Gate 3 goes to great lengths to ensure players can have their pick of many romantic partners. Throughout the game, adventurers can become intimate with every main party member as well as a handful of NPCs. Aside from Halsin in his bear form, arguably the other strangest sex scene sees the player character aka Tav becoming very familiar with The Emperor, a powerful Mind Flayer who can connect his brain directly with another.

Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t the first game to include romance options for players to explore. The inclusion of intimacy and “dating” systems in RPGs has become a trope of the genre and can be found in games dating back decades. While the original Baldur’s Gate by Bioware doesn’t feature any romanceable characters, the sequel, which was released in 2000, does include some, lending a handy launch pad for the threequel to expand upon 23 years later.

Given how long Larian Studios spent working on Baldur’s Gate 3, it should come as no surprise that the team won’t be expanding on the game any further. Aside from a few extra updates like mod support on consoles, the game is considered complete and won’t receive DLC or expansions. While the community suspected this was due to Dungeons & Dragons‘ parent company Hasbro making development difficult, Larian Studios’ CEO Swen Vincke has confirmed that wasn’t the case and that the team just wants to create something new.
