Destroy All Humans, They Can’t Be Regenerated: A Magic: The Gathering Manga isn’t a series that delves into any major Magic: The Gathering lore. Instead, the series follows two teenagers in the late 90s who play the game with their friends at school, and at their local card shop, forming an unlikely rivalry – and maybe something more.

The series follows Hajime Kanou in the year 1998, a junior high school student and fervent otaku obsessed with Magic: The Gathering, who brings his deck to school every day to play with his friends. Despite being scolded by his classmate Emi Sawatari, Hajime continues to enjoy playing against his friends, and butting heads with his aforementioned academic rival, even though she always seems to be one step ahead of him. While visiting his local card shop, Hajime runs into Emi, who just so happens to be a Magic player. What’s more, she’s been dubbed one of the best players at the shop. This eventually leads to the pair becoming unlikely friends, and growing closer to one another as they play Magic: The Gathering together.

The upcoming manga seems to put a focus on what truly drives the tabletop and card game communities: the passions of the players. While the duels featured throughout the series are extremely dramatic – and at times can come across as being rather campy, Destroy All Humans, They Can’t Be Regenerated: A Magic: The Gathering Manga looks like the perfect series for longtime fans of the game, and is filled with a clear passion for the complex mechanics and rules seen in Magic: The Gathering.
