Victoria Beckham embraces accessibility with Mango collab

It was interesting news this week that Victoria Beckham has become the latest designer to go from high-end to high street with her new collaboration with Mango – launching on 23 April to coincide with Mango’s 40th anniversary and guaranteed to cause a stampede in stores.

It gives Beckham access to a much wider audience and fantastic exposure – not that she’s ever far away from that –  but it also gives Mango, like so many other high retailers previously – such as Uniqlo with its Jil Sander and JW Anderson collaboration collections – a permit to offer something at a higher price point than its regular offer.

It’s obvious that its customers will be open to paying extra for high profile collaboration pieces, but it also gives fans of Beckham’s designs a way into her style at a fraction of the cost. It’s a winner all round.

Mytheresa among potential bidders for Net-a-Porter

Luxury e-tailer Mytheresa is reportedly among the potential bidders circling Yoox Net-a-Porter from luxury giant Richemont.

In a world where Mytheresa is seemingly flying sky high above its rivals – just look at the collapse of Matches and Farfetch – it leaves us in the industry perplexed as to why they’d take on loss-making Net-a-Porter.

Private equity firms Bain Capital and Permira are also among the list of reported bidders in talks with Goldman Sachs, which is running the sale process. This is one to watch and leaves us asking the question: Why is Mytheresa moving from strength to strength when its rivals are delving deep into the red?

Aphrodite Frasers

Frasers continues to snap up independents with Aphrodite acquisition

Another week passes and another multi-brand retailer is sucked into the Frasers machine. This week we had confirmation that Sunderland’s Aphrodite, established 30 years ago by brothers Andy and Duncan McKenzie, was the latest to be sold to Mike Ashley’s retail behemoth, joining a long line of others from John Anthony to Tessuti, Scotts, Cricket and more to do the same. And let’s not forget Matches, which was acquired before Christmas, placed into administration 11 weeks later and is currently waiting to find out what, if any, future it has.

How many more will Frasers Group snap up and ultimately merge into its Flannels super-boutique chain? It’s tempting to think this spending spree will only stop when there is no one left to buy… But let’s hope this does inspire a new generation of retail entrepreneurs to set up differentiated, independent businesses and we can see some new life breathed into the sector instead of so many businesses being taken out.
