Summary

  • Invincible season 2 keeps viewers on their toes with major character deaths, only to cleverly set up their return in season 3.
  • Dupli-Kate’s funeral scene in episode 6 hints at her return after facing the Lizard League, adding a twist to the storyline.
  • The survival of Shrinking Rae in season 2 poses interesting implications for Invincible, but doesn’t deter Dupli-Kate’s inevitable return.

Invincible season 2 has been a tragic one so far, but the series has already cleverly set up one dead main character’s return for season 3. Invincible is an incredibly violent show, and while the series premiere killed off all kinds of characters, the main characters have been relatively safe since then. However, this trend fell apart in Invincible season 2, episode 5, when a massive main character died, with others getting horribly injured. This Invincible death may not be permanent though, with a character’s season 3 return already being set up.

Invincible season 2, part 2 is finally here, with the highly anticipated continuation of Amazon Prime Video’s beloved animated adaptation of the superhero comic series of the same name now releasing. Invincible season 2, part 2 picks up right where Invincible season 2, part 1 ended, with Mark returning home from Thraxa to help stop a Sequid invasion while the other Guardians of the Globe take on a threat at home. However, things go horribly wrong when this threat becomes too overwhelming for the remaining Guardians, leading to a tragic main character death.

Invincible Season 2’s Funeral Scene Sets Up Dupli-Kate’s Return

Invincible Immortal Dupli-Kate Funeral

A mainstay Guardians of the Globe member in the form of Dupli-Kate died in Invincible season 2, episode 5, but her return is already being set up. Invincible season 2, episode 6 sees Dupli-Kate’s funeral scene take place, with her friends mourning her death at the hands of the Lizard League’s Komodo Dragon. Fans of the comics know that Dupli-Kate doesn’t stay dead for long though, with her making her grand return only a few issues later. Luckily, the funeral scene already prepares her method of return.

Invincible Season 3: Cast, Story, & Everything We Know

The Amazon Prime Video series Invincible shined during its first two seasons, and here’s everything we know about the upcoming season 3.

While at Dupli-Kate’s funeral, the deceased’s family is mentioned, with one family member playing an integral role in Dupli-Kate’s return. After Dupli-Kate’s death, her villainous brother Multi-Paul appears, with him attacking the Guardians of the Globe and attempting to get revenge for her death. Paul causes all kinds of destruction, and he is only stopped when Dupli-Kate makes her surprising return. She reveals that she has actually kept one clone at a safehouse, and although she took a break for a while, Multi-Paul’s villainous plans force her back into the superheroing world.

Dupli-Kate’s Return Would Make Invincible’s Shocking Guardians Loss Less Important

Although Dupli-Kate’s return is part of the comics, it does have the adverse effect of making the Guardians of the Guardians shocking loss less important. The Guardians of the Globe had been previously undefeatable up until this point, with their battle against the Lizard League being the team’s first big loss. This is especially tragic due to it being the team’s first mission under the lead of Rex Splode, with him feeling as if the deaths of Shrinking Rae and Dupli-Kate are his fault.

Having Dupli-Kate return strips the Lizard League’s triumph over the guardians of most of its power, as it shows that they really didn’t lose. It makes the Guardians seem like they simply lost a fight rather than lost a family member, taking away the punch of Invincible season 2, episode 5’s big death. On top of that, it gives Rex Splode less reason to feel guilty, taking away from the character’s redemption arc.

Shrinking Rae’s Survival (Probably) Won’t Change Invincible’s Dupli-Kate Plans

Although the Invincible TV series rarely changes the comics, episode 6 revealed one of the show’s biggest departures from the source material. Episode 6 showed that Shrinking Rae actually managed to survive the encounter with the Lizard League, with her comic book counterpart dying permanently after being eaten by Komodo Dragon. Keeping Shrinking Rae around could have a variety of effects on Invincible season 2 and beyond, with some speculating that this TV switch will lead to Dupli-Kate staying dead. However, this probably won’t happen.

Who Invincible Season 2’s Real Main Villains Are

Angstrom Levy was heavily advertised as the main villain of Invincible season 2, this isn’t the case, with a new villain taking his spot.

Although it would make sense to keep Dupli-Kate dead after keeping Shrinking Rae alive, the characters don’t work as substitutes for each other, meaning that Kate will have to come back as well. Shrinking Rae can’t take Kate’s role in the Multi-Paul storyline, which is important for the future of the show. Furthermore, Invincible puts an even greater focus on Kate and Immortal’s relationship as the comic series goes on, with this dynamic being needed for Mark and Eve’s relationship. This means that all the Guardians will have survived the Lizard League battle, which is an odd choice for Invincible.
