JR East Reveals E10 Shinkansen Train – The Next Generation High-Speed Train
Japan Railway Company just unveiled first images of high-speed E10 Shinkansen Train, it will redefine the way we travel for the year of 2030. This high-speed train will replace existing trains E2 and E5 on Tohoku route, currently this project is at implementation phase and expected to enter service in 2030.
A UK company, Tangerine, has been selected as the first non-Japanese design partner to design one of Japan’s iconic bullet trains. Tangerine Design Consultancy was tasked to craft both train’s exterior as well as its sophisticated interior that spans distinct passenger classes. The design is rooted in Japanese aesthetics, the goal is to provide passengers with user-centered, brand-aligned, and business-focused experience.
Inspired by Japan’s landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes, Tangerine UK has designed a train that provides a fantastic passenger experience across all classes. E10 Shinkansen Train is set to become one of Japan’s national prides that at one point, will intrigue overseas visitors. The exterior design pays homage to the diverse regions the train traverses, moreover, that mid-green color palette reflects the lush mountain forests and coastlines along the route. Even those graphic shapes are inspired by the silhouette of Sakura flowers, the iconic symbol of Japan, both domestically and internationally.
The interior is heavily focused on Japanese aesthetic traditions and craftsmanship, creating a refined and inviting environment. The interior lighting is carefully considered to create soft and calm ambience, seating and layout variations across all classes elevate passengers’ comfort while making sure operational efficiency for JR East. Graduated wall and seat upholstery create a premium aesthetic and enhanced onboard experience. This collaboration demonstrates a milestone for UK-Japan cooperation, setting a new standard for hospitality-focused design and sustainable travel.
