Mercedes-Benz just released for the firs time all electric Popemobile. This company has been supplying cars for Vatican for the past 45 years, but this year, this vehicle will be going all-electric. It means that the Pope will travel emission-free, just in time for the 2025 Jubilee (a special event that takes place every 25 years where millions of pilgrims are expected to visit Rome). Well, it’s a vehicle for the Pope, of course you can expect high requirements from Vatican, it was developed in close cooperation with the Vatican. The electric drivetrain has been adapted to the particularly low speeds needed for public appearances, it contributes to the realization of the encyclical “Laudato Si”.
Mercedes-Benz Electric Popemobile is equipped with G580 electric drivetrain with EQ technology, it is adapted to utilize the advantages of four near-wheel motors for special purpose of slow journeys at public appearances. The Popemobile has swivelling main seat that makes it possible to move around and address audiences from all angles. Behind that seat, there are two single seats which have been integrated on the left and right for additional passengers, usually for security guards. Just like other Popemobiles, it is painted in classic pearl white on the outside. The roof was removed at the B-pillar and it was harmoniously transitioned from side wall to create an unmistakable side profile.
During bad weather conditions, there’s a separate hardtop that provides protection for all passengers. the left rear door has been removed and rebuilt in traditional coachbuilding style. It is made from a single piece and welded into the bodyshell. The right-hand side, hinges of the rear door were relocated to the opposite side.
