Sony Computer Science Laboratories (CSL) found out an effective training method to improve your high-speed, complex finger movements when playing piano. It’s an exoskeleton for your fingers, designed not just for musicians (pianists), but also athletes and surgeons who require exceptional finger skills. This project is under the Core Research for Evolutionary Science and Technology (CREST) Strategic Creative Research Promotion Program of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

Manual practices help after tremendous amount of time, but multiple methods for breaking through our limitations, sometimes, are not enough.

Sony CSL Robotic Exoskeleton

Sony CSL’s research team has developed unique training method using an exoskeleton robot. It is designed specifically for fingers where each of them can move independently at highspeed, allowing user to experience complex movements at highspeed where normal human can’t execute themselves. Training conducted after one hand was fitted with this exoskeleton, it showed that there’s some improvements in skills after that, moreover, improvements were also occurred in the other hand that didn’t wear exoskeleton.

After several tests, the discovery suggests that our finger skills can be dramatically improved depending on practice quality. Sony CSL Exoskeleton Robotic Fingers help create new training programs, it can be customized to create unique training to skilled players. This practice methods can certainly increase your skill yet avoid excessive training to prevent disorders and injuries.
