Axiom Space x Prada Spacesuit has been revealed for the first time at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, Italy. Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) Spacesuit will be used for NASA’s Artemis III mission. The elite teams have been created to redefine spacesuit development, the outer-layer design and materials work was developed together when two industry leaders came together. These companies demonstrate their creativity, expertise, and engineering skill to enhance the next-generation spacesuit design.
The partnership between Axiom Space and Prada has set a new standard for cross-industry collaboration, it displays future possibility in commercial space.
During development process, Axiom Space used a dark cover layer for display purposes because it needs to conceal the suit’s proprietary technology. However, the final spacesuit worn on lunar surface will be made from a white material, because this special material reflects heat and protects astronauts from extreme temperatures as well as lunar dust. Prada has gone beyond their limit, demonstrating company’s values that always want to break boundaries. The result is the first step towards long-term collaboration with Axiom Space. Prada shared its expertise when it comes to high-performance materials, features, and sewing techniques.
Together with Axiom Space, Prada’s innovative sewing methods can bridge the gap between highly engineered functionality and a visually appealing white outer layer. The new spacesuit will increase the level of comfort while improving material’s performance.
